Are the political ideologies of today suited to address the problems of tomorrow?

Before we can even begin to answer that question we need to have a
clear understanding of just what they are. But we have to keep in mind
the often subtle (or not so subtle variances) differences and
interpretations that universally exist. For example, the term Liberal
means an entirely different thing (it means socialism) in the USA. And
in the United Kingdom it takes on another meaning. Even Democracy itself
has interpretations that take on complex variances from country to
country. Socialism takes on many shades of grey often depending on an
historical time frame.


In a recent piece I was presented a case for “The Common good” being
at the centre of every political philosophy. I described what I thought
to be the fundamental political ideologies. They are as follows.


What is a conservative?


I would say that Conservatives (LNP) believe in personal
responsibility, limited government, free markets, individual liberty and
traditional values. They believe the role of government should be to
provide people the freedom necessary to pursue their own goals.
Conservative policies generally emphasise empowerment of the individual
to solve problems. And they are cautious about change or innovation,
typically in politics or religion.


What is a neo conservative?


Neo conservatism goes back to the 30s however in its modern form it
is identified with George W Bush who embraced unbridled capitalism,
corporate greed together with literalist Christianity to form a modern
neo conservatism. Carl Rove, Donald Rumsfeld and others added global
superiority to the mix believing that America in all aspects was above
the rest of the world. A further element in this mix is Tea Party
Republican politics.

The Napthine government risks being swamped by a tide of
concern about the outlook for jobs and the state economy as it
languishes in a losing position nine months out from the state election.
In a sign the government is failing to gain traction at a
critical point in the political cycle, an Age/Nielsen poll has found the
Coalition lagging behind Labor 47 per cent to 53 per cent in two-party
preferred terms.
It follows a barrage of bad news for the state economy,
including the looming demise of the vehicle manufacturing industry and
deep cuts announced by Alcoa and Qantas.

The poll of 1000 Victorian voters taken during the past week
shows the Coalition's primary vote stuck at 41 per cent, well below the
peak of 45 per cent achieved at the November 2010 election, with Labor
on 37 per cent and the Greens on 13 per cent.
With Victoria's unemployment rate at the highest level for 12 years, job security has become a central concern for voters.
Health and hospitals ranked as the number one issue, followed
by employment, education, financial management and public transport.
Suggesting the government's signature infrastructure project,
the east-west link, may not be producing the political gains first
hoped, roads ranked at the bottom of the list, behind law and order and
the environment.
In a worrying sign for the government, 44 per cent of voters
rated Labor as best at creating jobs, compared with 36 per cent for the
Coalition.

Voters have turned on the O'Farrell government and are
threatening to throw it out of office after just one term in a dramatic
resetting of the political contest in NSW.
Three years after Barry O'Farrell was swept to power after
an historic rejection of the long-serving Labor government, the latest
Fairfax-Nielsen poll shows Labor is leading the Coalition 51 per cent to
49 per cent on a two-party preferred basis. The turnaround represents a
15 per cent swing since the March 2011 election and is the first time
Labor has led the Coalition since 2008.
Labor's primary vote, which crashed to an historic low of
25.6 per cent in 2011, has recovered to 35 per cent - an improvement of
12 points since the last Nielsen poll in March 2013.
The Coalition's primary vote has fallen to 40 per cent from
51.2 per cent at the last election - down 12 points since last year's
poll.

If the 15 per cent swing was applied uniformly across the
state it would see the Coalition lose up to 25 seats - wiping out gains
it made in western Sydney, the central coast and the Hunter three years
ago.

theory, namely that the Liberal Party exists primarily to perpetuate its
own existence. That’s it! Just consider for a moment that everything
the liberals do is influenced by this one principle. They also, I
believe, have strong views on who should receive welfare. Is it just for
the poor, the ill, and the disadvantaged? Or is it for the wealthy as

Amazingly the Abbott Government has managed to stuff up Australia in a very short period of time. Financially Abbott has destroyed all the good work that Labor did in saving Australia from the Global Financial Crisis, a fact which was muddled by Murdoch Media in partnership with the Coalition to such an extent that Australian voters were duped in a grandiose manner and voted out a Political Party which had done so many good things for all Australians and steered the Economy out of the recession incredibly well.
Now we're all paying the consequences of having one of the most absurdly incompetent and reactionary Government in the history of Australia.. Abbott and Co didn't stop messing up Australia but also our international reputation is in tatters and will take a long time to convince our overseas friends that Abbott  and Co was a horrible aberration and we will restore Australia's standing in the world.

Agus said the Indonesian Navy already knew of the territorial breach by after a radar alert originating in Kupang, East Nusa Tenggara, earlier in the week.

Indonesia also demanded formal clarification for the infringements through diplomatic channels and assurances that such incidents would not be repeated.
Jakarta has also demanded a halt to Australia’s military-led “Operation Sovereign Borders” until assurances are received that there will not be a repeat of such violations.

“The worst part about Mr Newman’s ignorant comments is that he’s only voicing what we know Tony Abbott thinks about climate change.

Labor knows climate change is real and knows the time to take action is now. It seems Tony Abbott, Greg Hunt and Mr Newman are the only ones who don’t know that.

"In 1903 the early sire of the modern conservatives, the Protectionist Party were denouncing the construction of the Trans-Australian Railway that would connect the eastern states to Western Australia.
The rail connection was a major incentive given to WA to join the Federation in 1901, as at the time the only way to get anywhere from Perth was by a long boat journey. Protectionist Senator James Styles complained to the parliament that the works would draw resources away from NSW and QLD, and that traffic simply did not justify the expense.
It wasn’t until 1911 that an ALP government got the project in motion. When the two sides of the nation were finally connected in 1917, the railway revolutionised internal trade and freight carriage with travel now taking days instead of weeks."

While there is bipartisan support for the NDIS, the program is forecast to cost $22 billion in its first full year of operation, scheduled for 2019-20. The Coalition will examine how to rein in that cost by making it tightly targeted and run with a minimum of bureaucracy.
Education cuts of more than $1.5 billion include dumping the trades training centre program and slashing before- and after-school care by $450 million.
Indigenous Legal Aid faces a cut of $43 million.
There are also cuts of $10 million from the Children's Medical Research Institute; $12 million from the Millennium Institute, one of the largest medical research institutes in Australia working on cancer and leukaemia research; and $15.1 million from the cancer care co-ordinators program.
Health services have been cut by $150 million, including Westmead Hospital, which will lose $100 million over three years. But the budget outlook measures are just the beginning.

Abbott, in fact, broke 13 commitments in his first 50 days and another three since. The Murdoch media are suppressing this. On Tuesday, Dennis Shanahan in The Australian congratulated Abbott and Education Minister Christopher Pyne on their ‘political decision to neutralise education funding’.
Note the weasel wording here:

‘Abbott risked being tagged as someone who did not keep his promises and slipping into a damaging parallel with Julia Gillard and the carbon tax. A perception framed before Christmas would last for the electoral cycle.’

– Tony Abbott and Christopher Pyne plan to amend Labor’s legislation so they can give ALL States ‘no strings’ funding deals – walking away from the needs-based loadings the Gonski report said were crucial to us closing the education equity gap, and walking away from funding being linked to improved teacher standards, student outcomes and increased transparency and accountability.
